Words Hold Weight

Jummah Mubarak, sis! Yesterday, in our private sisterhood community, we asked everyone to share a single word that captured their week. Today, as a reader of our Friday newsletter, we invite you to do the same.

Words have power — they can tell stories, capture emotions, and mark moments. But human words are limited, while Allah’s words are eternal, unchanging, and a guide until we return to Him.

Now imagine if you could leave behind words for others to hold onto until you meet again, what would you say? How much meaning would they carry?

This Jummah, we encourage you to reflect on Allah’s everlasting words and let them be the ones that carry you — in every moment, every test, and every joy.

Surah Yusuf (12:3):

“We relate to you, [O Muhammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’an, although you were, before it, among the unaware.”

Surah Yusuf is often called “Ahsan al-Qasas” — the best of stories. It is not just a story, but a timeless reminder that Allah’s words are more than history — they are guidance, comfort, and lessons for all time.

Throughout the surah, words play a powerful role:

  • Prophetic Words: Prophet Yaqub (AS) tells his young son Yusuf not to share his dream with his brothers, knowing the weight words can carry and how they might stir jealousy.

  • Words of Temptation & Patience: The wife of Al-Aziz used words to invite Yusuf (AS) to sin, but Yusuf responded with words of refuge in Allah: “Ma‘adh Allah!” (“I seek refuge in Allah!”).

  • Words in Hardship: When Yusuf (AS) was wrongfully imprisoned, he used his words to call others to tawheed, reminding them of Allah even in the darkest of places.

  • Words of Forgiveness: At the climax, Yusuf (AS) chose words of mercy over revenge when he said to his brothers: “No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.”(12:92).

Each moment in this surah shows how words can heal, protect, and carry immense weight — but only when aligned with Allah’s guidance. And that is why Allah describes the Qur’an as the best of words, the ones that endure when all else fades.

May Allah SWT’s words carry us at all times and be a source of comfort to us all - Ameen.
